When it comes to the nitty gritty questions, like ‘how long do I leave cleanser on my face’ or ‘how often do you cleanse’ and the ‘difference between cleanser and face wash’, don’t worry bestie because we have your back.

Why cleansing is important

Not including cleansing in your skincare routine is like dancing without music (awkies)…. doing one without the other just wouldn’t make sense. It preps your skin for other products to come!

Some of the reasons why you need to make sure you are cleansing daily, is because cleansing:

Eliminates congestion

One of the clear reasons to cleanse is that it cleans your face…duh! Whilst this might sound obvious, the elimination of dirt, oil, and other undesired particles makes this a super important part of your skincare routine. Our skin is constantly bombarded with bacteria, pollutants, viruses, debris and more throughout the day, which means you DEFINITELY need to be cleansing if you want any of those $$ you spent on skincare to be worthwhile.

Boosts hydration

Regular facial cleansing (combined with the application of a suitable moisturiser) is also essential for maintaining the skin's hydration. Skin that is dehydrated is more likely to appear textured, tired, and aged. Cleansing helps to maintain the skin's PH levels, allowing for adequate water and product retention!

Maintains clear skin

As mentioned above, cleansing is the number one way we keep congestion at bay. And you know what that means? It is also one of the key ways we keep acne at bay too!

Excessive dirt on the skin's surface produces follicular blockage, trapping dirt, dead skin cells, sweat, and sebum when you don't scrub your face. Because there isn't enough sebum on the skin's surface, germs can enter the follicles and cause irritation, which leads to acne.

Proper skin cleansing clears your pores of debris and prevents clogging, reducing the likelihood of acne breakouts.

How to cleanse

How long do you leave cleanser on your face?

Remember being taught in school to sing 2 x ‘Happy Birthday’s’ while you wash your hands to make sure that they are properly clean? Same deal with cleansing bestie! If you don’t cleanse for long enough, chances are you won’t give the product any chance to work its magic on your skin. For the technology to work at its best, it is recommended that you cleanse for at least one to three minutes and massage the cleanser around your face. This will give you enough time to overthink and think that there is a serial killer behind you whilst you cleanse to do a thorough cleansing and massage the cleanser's active components into your skin.

When rinsing off the cleanser, use lukewarm water. The skin dries out when exposed to hot water and on the flip side, if it’s too cold, the water won’t actually open your pores and you won’t get that deep clean you are looking for!

How often should you cleanse?

Generally speaking, every person should wash their face twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Especially for acne prone hotties like us, we tend to build up oils and bacteria overnight, so a morning cleanse, as well as a night-time cleanse should definitely be on the agenda.

PSA: do not try and splash your face like they do in face wash commercials as it will turn your bathroom into a wet & wild water park…

How do I know what cleanser is right for me?

Does your skin ever do that thing where it’s clear and perfect for a few days and then all of a sudden, it’s like ha-ha just kidding! Well, we are here to fix that. Our two cleansers here at tbh should have you covered…

tbh’s gentle cleanser

tbh’s gentle cleanser comes from its specially formulated combination of both cleansing and conditioning agents, to not only clean your skin, but leave it feeling silky smooth too! If you’re after more of a gentle cleanse this is the perfect one for you. This one is suited to both oily and dry skin, however we wouldn’t describe it as overly hydrating if that is what you are looking for!

tbh’s anti-bacterial cleanser
