Building a solid skincare routine is one of the most important steps you can take towards achieving a flawsome complexion if you have acne prone skin (that’s right, flawSOME not flawless - we don’t preach unattainable beauty standards around here). Not only can a great routine help keep breakouts at bay, but it can also help prevent future ones from forming. Although acne is one of the most common skin concerns out there, we know it can be tough. Let’s remind ourselves of the words the great Taylor Swift once sang - ‘nothing lasts forever’. You got this bestie!

Let’s break down the benefits of having a skincare routine and give you some tips on how to build a routine that's perfect for acne-prone skin. Because, let's face it, nobody wants to deal with unwanted visitors, and choosing the right products for your skin type is very important. You wouldn’t want to be using a really heavy duty moisturiser for example that has the potential to clog your pores now would you?

Let's get started on building a skincare routine that's specifically designed for your acne-prone skin. Trust us, your skin will thank you!

What is acne prone skin?

Acne-prone skin, to put it simply, is skin that is more likely to develop acne. If you’re experiencing frequent and consistent breakouts, it’s safe to say you may have acne-prone skin. Acne is a common skin condition that can affect people of all ages and skin types. Acne develops when the pores in your skin get clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. This then causes pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads to form on your skin.

Acne-prone skin can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, hormones, and environmental factors. Some people are just more prone to developing acne than others, and that's totally normal.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to manage acne-prone skin, *cough* tbh Skincare *cough*. Keeping up a good skincare routine specifically targeted to fighting breakouts can help keep your skin healthy and prevent acne. It's also highly important to avoid picking at your skin (even though we know how tempting it can be, bestie) or using any products that can irritate it. And it is especially important to remember that through it all, you’re perfect the way you are. Remember the goal is flawsome not flawless.

Benefits of a skincare routine

Before we dive into the specifics of building a skincare routine for acne-prone skin, let's first talk about the benefits of having a skincare routine in general. There are many reasons why you should lock in a regular skincare routine, regardless of your skin type.

Fights signs of ageing

A good skincare routine can help fight the signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Prevents breakouts

By consistently cleansing, treating, moisturising, and protecting your skin from the sun, you can prevent breakouts before they even start.

Improves skin texture

With a regular skincare routine, you can improve the overall texture of your skin, making it smoother and softer.

Boosts confidence

When you take care of your skin, which is a form of self care, you take the time to love your skin that little bit more. This can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin and that’s our ultimate goal!

Acne-prone skincare routine

When it comes to an acne-prone skincare routine, there are two essential products you're going to want to keep on hand, the anti-bacterial cleanser and the acne hack spot treatment. These two are our treating products, formulated by a medical research company that specialises in creating technology to break down what is known as ‘biofilm’. We’d also suggest keeping our thirst trap moisturiser and the skin shady SPF 50+ close by. These two are part of our ‘maintain’ products and are key to supporting your skin's recovery.

Acne cleanser

As previously mentioned, with acne prone skin, it’s always ideal to invest in a cleanser that's specifically formulated for acne prone skin to give your skin the best care it can. Our anti-bacterial cleanser ticks quite a few boxes (if we do say so ourselves). It’s your secret weapon to fight breakout causing bacteria with patented technology and remove unwanted congestion without stripping or drying your skin. The best part? It’s gentle and won't leave your skin feeling like the Sahara Desert. No more tightness or irritation, thank you very much! It's suitable for all skin types, so whether you're oily, dry, or somewhere in between, the anti-bacterial cleanser has got your back.

What is biofilm?

Biofilms are basically colonies of bacteria protected by a very hard to breakthrough layer called EPS. Most acne products on the market cannot target the bacteria that live within these structures. The patented technology in our anti-bacterial cleanser and acne hack cream does just that.

Step 1: Cleansing

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing. For acne-prone skin, of course we’d suggest our anti-bacterial cleanser

Step 2: Spot treatment

After cleansing, take the acne hack spot treatment and apply it to the breakout. Let the product sit on the skin for 5 minutes, allowing it to soak in properly before applying any other products over top.

Step 3: Moisturising

Moisturising is essential for all skin types, including acne-prone skin. Look for a lightweight, simple daily moisturiser that won’t cause breakouts, we’d suggest our thirst trap moisturiser. It hydrates with glycerin, pentavitin, sodium PCA and genencare and also provides barrier support with pentavitin, amino acids, squalane, apricot kernel oil, jojoba esters, olive oil and vitamin E.

Step 4: Sun protection

Sun protection is crucial for everyone, if that wasn’t already front page news! As we’re all aware, sun exposure can cause inflammation and damage to the skin, which in turn can lead to more breakouts. When looking for a sunscreen for acne-prone skin, a hot tip is to look for one that is oil free. This helps to avoid clogging up your pores. Apply a minimum of a quarter of a teaspoon of skin shady SPF 50+ to your fingertips and gently massage it onto your skin.

Tips for acne-prone skin

When it comes to building a skincare routine for acne-prone skin, it's all about finding the right balance between treatments, gentle care, and, most importantly, self love.

Be gentle

Avoid scrubbing your skin too hard or using harsh products that can irritate your skin and cause more breakouts.

Don't pick at your skin

Picking at pimples or touching your face can spread bacteria and make your acne worse.

Be patient

It can take time to see results from your skincare routine, so be patient and consistent.

Be kind to yourself

Lastly, but probably most importantly, always remember to be kind to yourself. We truly understand the emotional toll that acne breakouts can have on your confidence. It's not easy facing the world when you're experiencing a breakout, but please know that you are not alone in this journey. Acne is an incredibly common condition that many people will experience at some point, and while it may feel like it'll never go away, it's important to remind yourself that it won't last forever. So, keep your spirits high and believe in the power of self-love and healing. You are beautiful, both inside and out, with or without breakouts.

Acne might try to crash the party, but with the right routine, you can really show those pesky breakouts who's in charge! Remember, building a skincare routine is all about finding what works best for you. Patience is key. Rome wasn't built in a day, but with time, you'll start to see improvements. And when those moments of doubt creep in, remember to be kind to yourself and always keep in mind that you’re flawsome, with or without breakouts.
